Sustainable Engineering Group was hired to provide geothermal design, energy modeling, and Energy STAR certification services for the Middleton Middle School projects. Kromrey Middle School underwent a nearly complete renovation of the existing school with a large addition. The mechanical systems were replaced and the geothermal heating and cooling system now serves the entire school. Expansions were added throughout Glacier Creek Middle School including a new gym, class rooms and additional office space. The geothermal system heats and cools the new additions.
SEG provided energy and cost analysis of the actual Kromrey Middle School consumption versus the expected performance. Based on this analysis SEG recommended and implemented strategies such as better control of heating for frost protection, integration of RTU and exhaust fan scheduling and control and building pre-cooling/setback controls. These strategies resulted in a reduction of energy usage of 30%, an Energy Star rating increase from 55 to 88 and a $20,000 reduction in utility cost between first year vs. second year of operation.
